The Effects of Parent¡¯s Oral Care on Children

Abstract
Objectives :The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of parents¡¯ dental health behavior on elementary school students. The purpose of this analysis is that we can aid children in correcting their dental health behavior and help them create a plan to establish new and proper dental habits.

Methods :This survey was conducted between March 21, 2007 and March 24, 2007, in Kyunggi-Do. The research was carried out at one elementary school, with students in grades 4, 5 and 6. 364 students were surveyed through a questionnaire. The collected data was examined using the SPSS 11.0 program, using frequency, mean and standard deviation analyses, T-tests, one-way ANOVA and Duncan¡¯s test. Further analysis was done using Pearson¡¯s Correlation Coefficient and Multiple Regression analysis.

Results :First, the children¡¯s dental health behavior is positively influenced by the following two factors from the dental health belief model : The child¡¯s perceived benefits and the perceived seriousness. Second, The children¡¯s oral health characteristics are directly correlated with the following determining factors ; the students grade, the mother¡¯s level of education, and the family income level, the amount of conversation with the family, the child¡¯s favorite food, the students experience with oral health education, and the purpose of their visits to dental clinics. Third, the children¡¯s dental health behavior and dental health care will have the greatest influence on their parents¡¯s dental health behavior.

Conclusion :Based on these results, it is necessary for patients to help the dental health behavior and dental health care of their children. We found that the child¡¯s dental health behavior and dental health care will have the greatest influence on their parents¡¯s dental health behavior.
